Electric (Whisper-quiet) Drills
The second most common fear of the dentist office is the loud "drilling noise" of the dental drill. For this I have to tell you a short story. A few years ago around the 4th of July holiday we were seeing one of our great patients from Orlando at Maitland Family Dentistry. This patient happened to be a pyrotechnic specialist at Disney World, so he knew a lot about fireworks. After we were done, he turned to me and asked if we were lighting fireworks behind him. He was referring to how loud the drill we were using was. He affectionately named that drill "the screamer" like the fireworks he uses at work. Obviously he was kidding, but in every joke there is some truth. So we embarked on a quest to find out how we can make the noise from the drill as pleasant as possible. We then came across electric handpieces. These handpieces work differently in that they do not use air to turn the drill, but instead they use electricity which makes them much more efficient, powerful and most important -- very quiet.
