Who performs root canal treatments?
Any general dentist can do a root canal. However, some cases can be difficult to diagnose and treat. That's when you need to be seen by a root canal specialist, or endodontist. Endodontists only perform root canals, every day, all day. In addition to completing dental school, endodontists receive advanced education of 2-3 years to perfect the art of doing comfortable root canals (known as "endodontic therapy"). When is a root canal needed?
- When decay has reached the nerve of the tooth (or pulp).
- When a crack has reached the nerve of the tooth.
- When infection has gone into the nerve and caused swelling.
How do I know if I might need a root canal?
- You may have prolonged pain when drinking hot or cold liquids.
- You have a toothache that gets worse at night or when you lay down.
- You have a tooth which feels higher when you bite down.
- You need to grind down or clinch on a tooth that feels as though it gets higher when you bite.
- You feel sharp, shooting pain when you bite down on a tooth.
- You have a toothache that throbs and radiates all over your face, or feels like it aches into your ear.
