ROOT CANALS

At Maitland Family Dentistry we have been serving Orlando, Maitland, Winter Park, and all of Central Florida and surrounding cities since the summer of 1974. That's almost 40 years of service to the Orlando area.

It is normal for patients to be fearful when they hear that they need a root canal. After doing thousands of root canals all over Orlando we've found that when done by the right person and with the patient's comfort as a priority they are very predictable and painless.

Below, we've summarized a few helpful facts about root canals. If you live in Orlando or any of its surrounding cities and have a tooth bothering you and think you may need a root canal, feel free to give us a call for a complimentary consultation and evaluation at 407-67-SMILE or 407-647-2464.

  • Root canals can be very comfortable. You are completely numb like in any other dental procedure.
  • Root canals remove infection and pain from the infected tooth, making you feel better.
  • A root canal procedure usually takes about one hour.
  • Root canals relieve pain. Many patients come to us in pain. Root canals make them feel better.
  • Root canals do not remove the roots of the tooth. The roots of the tooth are still completely intact; only the infected nerve tissues are removed and medication placed.
  • Root canals save teeth that would otherwise need to be extracted.

Who performs root canal treatments?

Any general dentist can do a root canal. However, some cases can be difficult to diagnose and treat. That's when you need to be seen by a root canal specialist, or endodontist. Endodontists only perform root canals, every day, all day. In addition to completing dental school, endodontists receive advanced education of 2-3 years to perfect the art of doing comfortable root canals (known as "endodontic therapy"). At Maitland Family Dentistry, we have an endodontist as part of our team. This arrangement provides convenience to our patients, the absolute best in specialty care, and the highest level of quality service possible.

When is a root canal needed?

  • When decay has reached the nerve of the tooth (or pulp).
  • When a crack has reached the nerve of the tooth.
  • When infection has gone into the nerve and caused swelling.

How do I know if I might need a root canal?

  • You may have prolonged pain when drinking hot or cold liquids.
  • You have a toothache that gets worse at night or when you lay down.
  • You have a tooth which feels higher when you bite down.
  • You need to grind down or clinch on a tooth that feels as though it gets higher when you bite.
  • You feel sharp, shooting pain when you bite down on a tooth.
  • You have a toothache that throbs and radiates all over your face, or feels like it aches into your ear.

If you think you may need a root canal or have a toothache and live in Orlando, Maitland or Central Florida and would like a complimentary consultation and evaluation, give us a call at 407-67-SMILE or 647-2464. A root canal may completely take your pain away! We are here to help. We have been serving Orlando and Central Florida since 1974 and will be glad to help you, too.
